Americans love the unexpected -- how many got locked up in Iran over the past 40 years or so and either returned in a body bag or simply disappeared. This North Korea trip was much the same-- an accident waiting to happen maybe-- especially with so called juveniles. Anyone been to South Korea? CCTV follows you (literally) everywhere -- I spent a year there with Samsung --very weird place so many ways but you have to visit to experience it.

I was there in 97 and I have to say I didn't like it one bit...I felt an undercurrent of oppression. Not in your face but something just didn't feel right about the place. And I'm 100% sure the chicken in KFC wasn't chicken.

There isn't a great deal of culture around the dockyard area in Pusan. KFC was the only place worth seeing apart from Green St [;)]

It's hard watch --poor lad giving a plea on the tv last year-- no empathy from a cruel and corrupt government. As for the food -- even though they're within spitting distance of Japan the food is worlds apart-- rotten processed rubbish.

Disgusting. Hardly a word had been heard about him since he was imprisoned, and I don't think I could have imagined a more sickening outcome.

The companies that play down the danger of going on holiday there need to be shut down. Anyone looking to make cash from such a sordid business should be locked up for a long time - ideally in North Korea.

Why? What happened to people taking responsibility for their own decisions?

It's a shame there isn't anything like the internet with which to research peoples ideas of holiday destinations, isn't it?

Don't get me wrong, it's a horrible thing to have happened but why go there in the first place, when it's a country not known for having a welcoming and jolly and atmosphere.

I know what you're saying, but I think the way these companies have marketed the trips is wrong. Some of them make claims along the lines of "It's actually one of the safest places in the world, because the government there would never allow one of its citizens to harm you" - true, but it leaves out the fact that the government is making no promises about whether or not it'll harm you itself.

I'm sure Otto would admit he made a grave mistake if he could. He was young, thought he was invincible, wanted a story for his friends, and this company persuaded him that he could go to North Korea and he'd probably be just fine.

If they sold these trips with a clear agreement that customers accept it is dangerous, the North Korean legal system is extremely strict, punishments are extremely severe, that nobody will be able to step in and help you if you do run afoul etc. then I'd be ok with those companies arranging these trips. Trying to persuade people that it's not as bad as they think is wrong, though. It's every bit as bad as they think, and then some. People who go to NK must be under no illusions about that.

I know that would run counter to basic marketing principles, but that's just it. It shouldn't be ok to try and tempt people into the gulags. It's unethical.
