Vote for Safe Standing for Boro Fans

Do you want to be able to stand in safety at Boro games? Here is a chance to make your views known.
Middlesbrough Supporters Forum are conducting a poll to find out what Boro fans views are on safe standing.
All away fans stand, some cannot see because of this. Most of us sit at home games. We want to know what the opinion is of Boro fans about being able to stand at games in safe standing areas.
This is an independent survey. It does not mean safe standing will be introduced as a result. But at a recent supporters meeting in March with the Premier League we were asked by the PL officials to conduct surverys at our clubs and find out opinion.
This would not be a return to old style terracing. As it could be exactly the same density as seating it would not necessarily be cheaper. It would likely be Celtic and German football style rail seats with safety barriers in front of locked back seats.
There might need to be legislation for this to come to pass in the top two leagues (It is permitted in lower leagues) and that may or may not be some way off but it is important to find out whether fans actually want to have the choice to stand.

The survey will be online for a month.
A recent survey of arsenal fans polled 7,329 fans. It would be great if we could reach a similar number.
It will be on the Boro site soon and I am going on BBC Tees tonight. Press releases have been sent to Northern Echo and Gazette. I have also given an interview with Tyne Tees.
We need as many votes as possible. The survey is very quick and simple to do but will collect your opinion whether you chose to sit or stand yourself.

How so? You can easily disagree with all of that?

No one is forcing anyone to stand if they don't want to. There is emphasis on choice, and yes, it might make those who refuse that choice look unreasonable, but it might be worth considering those refusing others the choice are unreasonable.

Voted pro choice, for what it's worth. I like the option. It'd depend who i'm with as to whether I would do it. I've been to away games with my mates Dad who struggles to stand a whole game, but has no choice, and that is rubbish and not right, but you can't force a whole section of thousands to sit down. Segregating standing and none standing makes sense. It doesn't need to be unsafe.

Personally I'd love to stand, but if I was with my Dad, who has MS there would be no chance.

If people want to stand all match, let them, in a standing area. People who want to sit all match, for whatever reason should not be forced to stand. The best way to combat this is to have separate area's.

Standing area's if done properly are no more unsafe than sitting area's. the move to All seater stadium was an overreaction (although an understandable one) to Hillsbrough. Where it has been shown that the cause of deaths was not really caused by standing, it was a whole host of failures from stadium design to poor crowd management. Hillsbrough would not happen in modern stadia.

Talking with supporters from different clubs at Premier League meeting many no longer attended away games because they said they couldn't see because of people standing.
Disabled fans have had problems at some matches with Boro fans standing in front of them. Away at The Valley, Charlton is an instance I remember.
Designated standing and sitting areas could perhaps solve this problem. Then again you may think that all seater means all seater.
Good to have a vote I think. To see what ALL fans think.

I'm in favour, because I want to stand and because I think those who don't shouldn't be adversely affected by people standing in seating areas.

But I agree with the guy above that the survey *seemed* to be pro-standing. Maybe if I said I was against it I'd have seen different follow-up questions.

Middlesbrough FC are not set against this any longer, whatever their position in the past. They will be carrying this survey on the site.

The Football League are being really proactive in the lower divisions in putting in rail seats and getting permission for existing terracing to be converted into safe standing at 21 other grounds.
At a recent Premier League meeting I went to Premier League officials asked each of the Premier club fan reps to go back to their clubs and conduct a poll.
Over the past year I have witnessed a sea change. I never thought I would hear Richard Scudamore say standing is not a safety issue. I never thought I would hear the Premier League asking us to conduct surveys and tell us how they would be spending several months looking at every angle of safe standing and implications for fans not standing as well as sitting. And whether or not other fans in seating areas should be made to sit down.
Something big changed when the 30 away cap was brought in.

I enjoy standing when I go to watch Stockton but that is a total different set up.

I admire what you are doing here - really do.

It is unequivocally not a safety issue. Therefore, it must be a financial one.
One that our chairman hasn't wanted to stomach.

This shouldn't have needed a survey but..... hope it has an impact.

Rob, I have had to stop attending away games now as I am unable to stand for too long due to arthritis. I would therefore welcome safe standing areas as long as there was seating available as well. This would give fans a choice of how they want to watch their football.

I have completed the survey. I am not happy at all if they think they can charge seat prices either for people standing. I want the old holgate set up returning , barriers scattered here and there and tickets prices 8 a game , you would get 15,000 stood up in the south with an old style set up. just make sure you find out how many can safely stand with some massive E I O,s rocking the stand then simply don't allow any more in once it is full. the rest can sit down for 13 a game. sorted.

Done but voted against it. Sorry but I remember the dark days when You took your life into your hands standing at some grounds. My late mother was kicked by West Ham fans at Upton Park. Not saying it will be like that now but why change what has worked for a long while now. We he had no major incidents in all seater stadiums. We only have a fairly small catchment. Put everybody behind one goal and the ground will look empty.

I know this will be popular but not for me sorry.

"Not saying it will be like that now but why change what has worked for a long while now."

To move forward, if everything stayed the same then it would be a very boring existence. Having experienced in several grounds in Germany I can assure it's not the same as it was 30 years ago and only adds to the atmosphere, however everybody is entitled to their opinion.

If there was a safe standing zone at Boro, would it be compulsory to sit down everywhere else and would action be taken against those who continue to obstruct the view of others in seating areas.
I'm not sure about it but I suppose it would give people a choice.

To the person above who voted against, fair enough but there is absolutely no question of returning to old style standing. It could well be if permission is granted by the government, EFL and Boro that the standing areas would be no more or less crowded than present seating areas. Just with the seats locked away and you stand with a bar to lean on.
As for the question will a safe standing area with rail seating mean everyone else has to sit down, well that is a question the Premier League is currently wrestling with.
For anyone that has been to an away game in the past five years, how many times can you remember sitting down? The answer would probably be between 0-5.
A question many are asking is does people standing prevent those that can't being able to see? Does it stop people going to away games? As everyone stands at away games should those standing have safety/comfort with a rail to lean on etc?
Or should we perhaps comtinue as we are without a safe standing area? Everyone is presently turning a blind eye. Personally, I think that might be good but only if there were areas for people that can't stand. But what happens if there is a change of heart and advice and Safety Officers tell stewards to sit everyone down again.
Lot's of food for thought here.

Shrewsbury Town - hope to be the first all seater ground in the country to bring in (Celtic style ) rail seating, safe standing.
They are fund raising via crowdfunding to become the first EFL club to introduce rail seating.
So this is a big first for the English League. 555 seats could be removed or rail seats.
They have applied to Sports Ground Safety Authority for the go ahead.

Results of the survey just published.

It is a survey and not a poll - so if my maths teacher friend is correct the total percentage of Boro fans that would like to see a choice of whether to stand or sit is 94%

We have 65% prefering to stand - they all think eveyone should have the choice. That 2172 people.
16.5% of people prefer to sit. - and 95.5% say they thought people should have the choice, or 557 people.
17.9% say depends on the game, or 330 people.
That makes a total of 94% saying they think people should have choice on whether to sit or stand including special "safe seating area."
