Millwall in play-offs (good away match for us in recent years) reminded me of this Panorama. 40 years ago, jeez.

That brings back a lot of memories. Remember "dirty northern p0nce" being an insult at school for a while.

Different world now in a lot of ways but funny how some of the themes are still the same.

I taught the manager's son (steve Petchey, son of George, the manager) at the time. He was captain of the school VI form team which I coached. He said he could only watch games if he went up with his dad at 10 a.m. on Saturdays. If he travelled on the train from Brighton he would be filled in at the station.

'F Troop, Treatment and the Halfway Line'

They only ever turned up once Millwall I'm not sure if it was in the late 80s early 90s .
They brought about 400 up and most of them were lads ..So they had had about 300 to 350 atleast lads amongst a following of about 400 to 450 at the most I'd say .
At they end of the game they didn't know what hit em some ran back towards the ground others stood and had a go .There was large mobs of Boro everywhere they turned some getting stuck in others pelting them with missilies etc .
I few year ago I read a book about a copper who went under cover in the police and one of his mission was infiltrating the Bush Wachers of Millwall .
He said at every ground he went to he never had to defend himself or throw a punch he only had to be in the mob and watch a few lads through punches and watch they opponents of Millwalls Holigan firms run with one exception when he came to Middlesbrough he has to fight like hell and actually be a Holigan rather than act like one and his cover was nearly blown ...he was nearly arrested .
What amazed him he said as that our bobbies seemed to thrive on the hiding something others hooligans including them where getting it about to get .
To be honest we've never done much down there .
A car I travelled in once got its Windows put threw on a night game and we traveled back in the snow with our socks on our hands and one lad had his boxer shorts on his head to keep his lugs warm .
We dropped two lads at home in Luton too before the three of us got home freezing .We laid an old sheepskin jacket on the back seat over the broken glass. [:D]

I saw Cleveland police turn a blind eye a few times in the 80s when a rival firm came.
I think that game was 88 LH.
They got a bit of pasting Millwall after the match.

Yes mate that will be about right 88 ish [^] .
I remember watching some sort of Panorama programme about 6 month to a year later and it was about trouble at games between teams outside the top division .The main suspects were mentioned Cardiff , Leeds and Millwall etc .
We got a mention on this chart that whoever in the programme had had made up to discuss arrests at certain flash point games .
It was Millwall attacked so and so and so many arrests etc along with Leeds , Cardiff and I think Birmingham and Stoke etc .
Then he seemed in shock when he said Middlesbrough V Millwall 39 arrests after the game and he more or less had to double check it when he read out Visting Supporters attacked and chased outside the ground .
