My dad always used to say they sang 'Aye, aye, aye, Horsefield is better than Pele'.

True? Yay or nay?

Pun not intended.

Goat - Quite true the Horsfield/Pele chant was "we all agree, Horsfield is better than Pele".

The original line it was taken from was "you ,me and us, we are my favourite people" from an Alma Cogan hit song. [:D][:D]

looking back over the 40 0dd years ive watched the Boro theres quite a few who dont immediately spring to mind as the favourites of fans but were more than decent , some of the top of my head are , Glover, Wilkinson, Falconer, Downing (Derek), Boam and Brennan.
also i can remember a sports shop ran by the early 70,s full back whos name escapes me at the moment which was opposite the Swan in billingham .

Can't go back as far as some of you, but I'll go for Paul Wilkinson. Does get mentioned occasionally, but not as much as, for example, Hendrie.

Proper footballing centre forward, as opposed to a long ball lump.

To be fair on this board the general trend seems to focus on all things negative. They would rather Slag players off than concentrate on their positives. This happens a lot in the stadium as well. It's been a disappointing season which has been hard to watch but the thing I which really annoys me is the negative attitude of a lot of our fans. I haven't been looking forward to games lately for obvious reasons but the thing I dread most is clueless people shouting negative things to our players. We all get frustrated but it has been constant this season.

David Mills. Never seen him mentioned. 11 years at the BORO and close to 1 goal every 4 games.

[^] Nashvagas2 re David Mills.

I was gutted when he left for West Brom as he'd been one of our best players throughout the first half-decade or so of me following the Boro.

Things never really worked out for him as a player anywhere else though, which might explain why he's rarely mentioned.

David Armstrong was another player I remember fondly from the same era. He seems more widely remembered than Mills, perhaps unsurprisingly as he did do pretty well after leaving us. IIRC his form at Southampton even got him a handful of England caps in the mid 80s.

Willie Falconer was a class act in the attacking midfield role, strong on the ball, and ran the show on many occasion during games. Never ever got that form back after the serious knee injury he sustained which kept him out for almost a season.

..I also thought Alan Comfort might have been a special player, but another who had a career ending injury at the club.

In respect of Boro players in the 60s and 70s moving on and not making an impact, people often forget that in those days there was only one substitute so there was no matchday 'squad' as such. There was little talk of 'formations' and picking a team depending on your opposition. If the team was playing well it tended to get picked for the next game whether it was against the top of the league, the bottom of the league, or in the FA or League Cup. The picture erimus has put up of the 1974 division two winners is pretty much the 'squad' for most of that season with only Brian Taylor missing (he used to rotate as substitute with Peter Brine and Malcolm Smith). When David Mills went to West Brom they were one of the top teams in the country but he was often the substitute. Very difficult to make an impression. In 1967 we played, and beat, Chelsea in a League Cup match. Chelsea offered £60,000 for Geoff Butler and he was away. Butler hardly featured for Chelsea and then Sunderland in the first division for a couple of years until he dropped down a division and joined Norwich. Stan Anderson said he didnít want to lose certain players but he had very little say in it. £60,000 was a lot of money in the 60s. Don Masson dropped to the fourth division to get where he got to. It wasnít until they got to the second division that he got the chance to step up to the first with QPR where it all worked out for him.

Mary Mills is a good shout - british transfer record when he went to the baggies...

John Neale (manager) don't get the credit he deserves, the football his team is quite possibly the best (in the pure sense of the word) the best I have ever seen a Boro team play over the past 49 50 seasons.

despite being forced to sell Graeme Souness, David Mills, Stuart Boam and Craig Johnston. he was still able to produce a winning team the won some superb games of football and often against the so called 'big boys'...very very under rated was John - and Chelsea fans I know almost to a man claim it was the time to be a Chelsea fan when he was the manager.

Agree loved JN's time as manager, he built a very good, young attacking team, taking over from big Jack was no easy task but he changed the formation & way we played overnight, we wern't too good on our travels, but scored boat load of goals at good old Ayresome Park

spot on erimus....

and it was ability to build a young attacking team that brought him to the attention of Chelsea - he bought great players for them, I often wonder if we would have got any of them had he stayed - Pat Nevin for instance.

Crazy decision to sack JN & bring in Boby Murdoch, it split the club completely, BM was a good at youth level, JN, under instructions from Charlie Amer, as you rightly pointed out had to sell the silver cutlery, I honsetly think if JN had stayed relegationed wouldn't have happened, my opinion of course, but with BM been new to the game of amangement & the entire midfield sold & what a midfield, he was on a hiding to nothing, Charlie Amer was a disgrace in that summer to dismiss JN.
