We land in Chennai start of October ,doing a couple of days around the area.
Overnight train to Cochi, staying a few nights in homestead in kumarokum( Kerala backwaters)
Sight seeing.
Question we have is we want to spend the next 7 days travelling back to Chennai on foot,bus,...any other mode of transport, taking in as many untouched villages and hill towns ," real India" .
Has anyone done anything like it?
Advice on travelling by foot with just a rucksack would be appreciated

Edit-
Having thought about it,we will probably do the trekking first from Chennai to Kerala, travelling light,as I know my Mrs will want to buy everything in India and I'm not carting it 400 miles!

Ooooooh Kerala! Lovely beaches. Spent four nights there some years ago. Flew in though so can't help you with trains.

XXXXXX hot though. You sure you want to do it on foot/bus?

Private air conditioned minivans are not so expensive with a driver plus you get the local knowledge. Just pay for his digs and a bite to eat and he'll be happy enough.

Much better option if you ask me.

By foot I think I mean we can walk the length of the town and then get transport to next town.
I think a/c is a must[^]

Have done the Goa to Kerela and that was long enough on the train!! Indian trains are ok but the best seats are in cabin type sleepers that take 4. Problem with them is that they have dirty and thick windows that keep out the sunlight and a lot of the view. You can book just the standard seats but for the length of journey I wouldn't fancy it myself. Kerala is lovely though and the backwaters are stunning. By the way tickets sell out months in advance so either use an Indian agent or book well ahead. Good site for info is seat61.com

Would only add that 'real India' can be a bit of a shock. [xx(] Why not fly up to Goa instead [:D]
