Spurs v Middlesbrough match thread

Into the 2nd half of the season & we desperately need all 3 points to keep the gap between the Boro & the closing pack.
Big games, on big grounds against big teams is what the PL is all about, with another big club, similar to Everton next week, ready to test their fast flowing PL challenge credentials against the Boro’s tight defensive unit to the limit.
If you’re a similar age to me, who can forget the league cup matches in the 70’s when on route to Spurs winning the cup in 1972, we played 3 tight league cup games, 1st at Ayresome Park, which ended 1-1, 0-0 after extra time at WHL & after Spurs won the toss of the coin for home advantage for the 2nd replay at their place, the game had to go to in to extra time again, which we eventually lost 2-1.
Stand outs for me against Spurs over the years, David Hodgson’s hattrick in 81, Heine Ott’s debut the following season August 1981, which also included debutants Mick Baxter & Joe Bolton, while Bobby Murdoch 1st game in charge as manager of the Boro, debutants for Spurs that day, Ray Clemence & Chris Hughton, I think.
We have enjoyed a few bits of success at WHL in my time, Richard & Beck torturing Campbell at the back, Jankovic in 79, League cup victories in 74 & again in 2003 on the way to our Carling up triumph.

16-10-1909 1st away fixture – Spurs 1 Boro 3

Spurs v Boro fixture will be 49th fixture in North London between the 2 teams with the following record:

Won 12
Drew 11
Lost 27
Goals scored - 68
Goals against - 97

A selection of players that represented Boro & Spurs

Cyril Knowles: CK wrote to Harold Shepherdson for a trial, the Boro recognised his talents as a potential left back & CK was placed into their amateur squad. He made his debut late in the 1962–63 season after regular left back, Mick McNeil, picked up an injury & out of desperation Bob Dennison picked CK at LB, after just 39 first team appearances, scoring one goal, records don’t show who he scored against though, legendary Spurs manager Bill Nicholson signed Knowles in 1964 for £45,000, he went on to play 402 games for Spurs, scoring 15 goals. When his playing career finished he spent a couple of seasons at the Boro under Bobby Murdoch as reserve team trainer-coach.

Graeme Souness: The best Boro player I have seen in my time following the Boro, Sounes was the last signing Stan Anderson made, what a final signing too, SA paid Spurs £35k for him & between 1972, making his debut away to Fulham January 1973 & Norwich at home Dec 1977 he played 176 games, scoring 22 goals, on the 9th October 1976 he scored the only goal against Norwich to put the Boro at the top of the 1st division.
Souness, Souness, born is the king of Ayresome Park

Jonathan Woodgate: JW had 2 spells at the Boro, his 1st spell 2006 when on loan from Real Madrid, he played 30 games without scoring, the following summer, 2007, JW was Southgate 1st signing at £7m, he played 16 games, again without scoring, when he was, surprisingly, sold to Spurs for £8M, between 2008-2011 he played 49 games scoring 2 goals, making his Spurs debut against Everton two days later, he scored his first Spurs goal on 24 February 2008 a header in the League Cup final against Chelsea in extra-time to win Spurs their first trophy since 1999. In 2012 he re-signed for the Boro playing 57 games, scoring 2 golas, he left the club in 2016.

Gazza: Paul Gascoigne played 92 games for Spurs between 1988-92, scoring 19 goals. After a few seasons of travelling to various clubs Robbo signed Gazza for the Boro where he played 41 games between 1998-2000, scoring 4 goals, his 1st game for the Boro was a sub appearance in the 1998 League cup final against Chelsea, he left the Boro for Everton.

Nick Barmby: Started his career at Spurs & between 1992 -95 he played 89 games, scoring 21 goals, in 1992 he actually scored his 1st Spurs goal against Lennie Lawrences Boro team on his debut in 2-2 game at WHL, Boro were leading 2-0 at one point. In 1995 NB became a Boro’s record signing at £5.25M, scored on his Boro debut away to arsenal & set up the 1st goal at the Riverside for Higgy. He played 42 games scoring 8 goals & within 17 months he was on his way to Everton.

Mido: Played 48 games for Spurs between 2005-07 scoring 14goals. Gareth Southgate signed Mido for the Boro from Spurs for £6M; he played 25 games, scoring 6 goals, one of which was the winner at the Riverside against Spurs the 1st home game of season 2008-09.

Karl Naughton: Played 42 games for Spurs between 2009-2015 without scoring, he was loaned to the Boro in 2010 when Gordon Stracham was manager, playing 15 games without scoring.

Milos Veljkovic. On 16 October 2014 MV spent three months on loan at the Boro, bue to the superb form of the midfield duo of Grant Leadbitter and Adam Clayton in Central Midfield, Veljković was limited to a few substitute appearances and his loan was not extended in January.

Remember us stuffing them early 90's with Tommy Wright scoring and Kernaghan keeping Teddy Sheringham quiet all game. 3 or 4 nil, I think.
That was at home, though.

Not all that many recent wins against them, are there?

Yeh I think it was a night match. We drew away two each I think. Two nil up early on , we threw a a few winning positions away on the road that season. Cost us in the end.
I always enjoy spurs away, one of the few grounds with a decent atmosphere still.

It's Like a training ground exercise

Attack v defence

We must have more than this

"we seem to be waiting to concede."

Again. Sounds like Spurs camped in Boro half and creating chance after chance.

I might be wrong though [rle]

Took 44 minutes for Hoddle to give us some credit for our defensive displays

we really have nothing to offer to the game other than defend, defend, defend. It is an awful approach to the game and has to stop. We are the 2nd lowest scorers out of 92 clubs and look like a laughing stock.

Our only option today is to defend. Weere poor as it is, never mind against a spurs team who press high. If they press, we go long, negredo lacks the movement (noticeable always on the wrong side of the pitch when the ball gets cleared) and pace to play in a counter attacking team (which we undoubtedly need to be today). We would be better with the 1 being bamford in my opinion.

At the end of the day games are attack v defence, I have criticised Aitor in the past as his teams are negative & predictable but you still have to give the Boro credit for the defending in numbers, blocking shots, winning vital headers in the 1st half which Spurs didn't have too many chances no matter what the commentators said.
Credit to the Boro as a team for that 1st half display, hopefully we can carry it into the 2nd half, but when Spurs start becoming desperate so to will the cheating & that's where you want a good, strong ref

Now this is the type of game where Karanka's defensive tactic is right, but will have to change things if we go behind.
