Defeat But There Was Hope.

Boro fell to yet another defeat today but what a fight we made of it. The 3-1 scoreline greatly flattered Man United. Up to that unfortunate slip by Victor Valdez we might so easily have taken a draw. Jose Mourinho was a relieved man as he jumped for joy with Valencia’s injury time tap in clincher. We are now 5 points from safety with only ten games to go but there is at least a glimmer of hope to cling to now. I am in no way intending to have a go at Aitor Karanka. The man from the ....

No Cheer In Boro\'s Cup Demise To Manchester City

Boro\'s Wembley cup dream was ended when we were outclassed and defeated by an imperious Manchester City. So often in the past a nemesis for City, Boro\' s chances of repeating past glories were dealt a blow to the heart when Silva scored inside three minutes. We did still have a go but once again we were unable to really throw off the shackles and mount any sustained attacks. A fourth successive home tie and it was a full house for a big cup occasion, a Quarter Final against ....

One Foot Back In The Championship

Storm clouds gathered over the Bet365 Stadium as Boro fell to a devastating defeat at Stoke. In a game where we desperately needed a result Boro were comfortably beaten 2-0. Our slide that began at Christmas time has now seen us dumped into the relegation places. Judging by today\'s performance there is little hope of it ending anytime soon. Sad times indeed. This is my blog written straight after the defeat at Stoke begins. I wtrote this with the sound of booing for Aitor Karanka but ....

Eagles Send Boro Close To Cliff Edge

It was the big relegation 6 pointer that neither team could afford to lose but van Aanholt\'s first half goal for Palace leaves Boro floundering in deeply troubled waters. Palace went into this game on the crest of a phenomenal slump. A Boro win would have made it a crisis for Allardyce and his team. But we really let them off the hook. Boro started slowly but were set-up to keep it tight. I was clock watching from almost the start counting my chickens that a 0-0 could be a useful point. Yet ....

Boro Escaped To Victory

Boro escaped to victory v battling Oxford and landed a home Quarter Final draw with either Man City or Huddersfield as reward. That makes a fourth straight home draw at the Riverside. Boro will be really Up For The Cup again come the weekend of March 11th. What a FA Cup Quarter Final in prospect them against either former Champions Man City or Adam Clayton\'s old Terriers Huddersfield Town. You can almost smell the cost of Wembley drinks as a semi final date beneath the arch is now ....

Boro Hold Everton And Could So Nearly Have Won

Living in Manchester for the past 20 years hasn’t weakened my love for Boro, despite having both 0ld Trafford and The Etihad just down the road, and my philosophy of especially supporting them when things aren’t going too well swung into action on Saturday with a trip up to see the Everton game. Torrential rain , freezing temps and a biting wind didn’t put off the 31,000 of us, including good away support, and the atmosphere was great. Boro’s solitary four ....

The Heat Is On

January ended with Boro battling to a draw at home with a well drilled West Brom but there is no doubt now that we are in a real scrap for our Premier lives. Have we got the stomach and maybe just as importantly the resources and talent to keep our heads above the whirl pool? Yesterday\'s farcical end to the transfer market on the same night as a league programme has left us with so many Premier concerns. This is my blog written straight after the game last night. In my gloom I forgot about ....

Stewy Starred In Cup Victory

Boro went through to the 5th round stage of the FA Cup thanks to a superb Stewy Downing goal seeing off off Accrington Stanley on Saturday. It was a Man of the Match performance reminding the manager that he has an experienced Premier League player in his squad that could and should have an important role to play this season. Here is my match report written for itv.com straight after the game. It is a very busy couple of days now for Boro with lots of distractions from the immediate ....

Irons Put Boro Nearer Relegation Fire

In a huge game for Boro, Andy Carroll proved too hot to handle, helping himself to a brace as West Ham heaped misery on Middlesbrough with a 3-1 defeat. It had been end to end in the first half with two teams really going for it but Carroll’s second right on half time proved our undoing after we had come back so strongly with a Stuani goal cancelling out Carroll’s unopposed header from a corner. The third goal was a late, late breakaway as Boro chased the game and even then it took ....

An Emotional Day At Watford

Boro v Watford was overshadowed by the death of Watford legend Graham Taylor. There were tributes before and during the game observed by both sets of fans to one of football\'s real gentlemen. It was very emotional day indeed. This was my blog written for itv.com on the Abbey Flyer Train between Watford Junction and St Albans after the final whistle at Vicarage Road. It was an emotional afternoon but it is one of those days when you feel privileged to be part of a community coming ....

Ten-man Boro Ease Past The Owls

The third round draw saw Boro paired up against Sheffield Wednesday, a side on a five-game unbeaten run and currently in sixth place in the EFL Championship. We went into the game following a bore-draw with champions Leicester City the week prior; a fixture we might have thought we deserved to win on the day. Both sides fielded strong line-ups, with the Boro making five changes to the side that faced the Foxes. Many fans expected to see new £6m signing Rudy Gestede make his first start ....

Boro Tame The Owls

Ten man Boro brushed aside Sheffield Wednesday yesterday to march on into the 4th round hat of the FA Cup. Both teams finally got up for the cup in the second half yesterday after a tepid first 45minutes. But there was more action, thrills, spills, red cards and goals to make up and entertain the near 24 000 crowd. And now we have the excitement of the 4th round draw tonight. Here is my Boro fan blog written straight after the game with nicely biased report on the refereeing and the red ....

Boro Sink The Swans

What a way to finish off a deeply worrying week. We buried the bad memoris of Southampton and the nightmare of wicked Wednesday v Liverpool with a brilliant 3-0 win over Swansea. Christmas came early as Negreedo (2) and de Roon grabbed the goals. The returning Gaston Ramirez made such a massive difference. Fabio was sensational at the back. Clayton the destroyer stepped forward and turned goal maker with the cross for the first goal, superbly despatched into the corner by Negredo. ....

Boro Taken Apart

Boro were taken to the cleaners in a second half where Liverpool underlined their title credentials in a display that we just couldn’t live with. Ironic really that the first half was fairly even with chances for both sides. In fact we responded well to going a goal down with Mignolet making a strong save from Viktor Fischer but after the break it was a different story as we were completely swamped by a rampant Liverpool. Some Premier lessons tonight alright. We might have battled so ....

Boro Can Right The Wrongs V Liverpool

Boro can bury the Southampton performance and result with a very positive display and points haul at home to Liverpool. In fact two strong showings at home this week could mean that the Southampton debacle can very rapidly be forgotten history. Not that it is great compensation for all those that endured a woeful second half at St Mary\'s. Boro failed to change and respond tactically after going a goal down and that second half seemed to drag. All I could think of was the long haul ....

Boro Strike At Stricken Hull

To me, East Coast derbies mean North-east derbies and the NE’s  ‘Hotbed of Soccer’. So Boro v Hull isn’t one that particularly stirs my blood, also taking into account that the two teams have spent decades in different leagues - however, it is sad to see the two of us in precarious positions in the Premier League.  So both teams need three points really, but this won’t happen. Looking at the respective points and Goals ‘For’ and ....

Boro Get Owls And Sink Hull

Boro were were handed a home draw in the FA Cup 3rd Round last night. We will face Championship Sheffield Wednesday at the Riverside on the weekend of Saturday January 7th. That will mean linking up with former Boro winger Adam Reach now settling into life further back on the left flank. Boro fans heard the news in transit to last night\'s vital Premier relegation clash with Hull City. It was a game that we simply had to win and we did not disappoint. Just the one change to the ....

Boro Pay The Penalty At Leicester

So close but so far. Marten de Roon was drawn into an injury time penalty foul that meant Boro failed to beat the Champions in their own King Power domain. Gutted was the overwhelming reaction and emotion shared by Boro fans and players alike. Points snatched away from us with just seconds to spare. Points and a victory that would have seen us taking one giant leap up the table and away from the relegation trap door. So close... We had played so well and so richly deserved the 3 ....

Home To Chelsea Chance To Find Out How Good We Are

Boro’s first home win and uplifting draws at Arsenal and Man City before the international break have lifted morale in no uncertain way, and we might even be said to be looking forward to the visit of Chelsea on Sunday 20 Nov. However, home ties do have that extra sense of expectation, so avoiding defeat must be the first priority against a Chelsea team which has been sweeping all before them since they changed to a 3 -4 -3 formation in September. Boro fan in Manchester Alan Mason talks ....

Boro Go Down Fighting V Chelsea

Boro put up a special Sunday show yesterday against a Chelsea reaching out for the top of the Premier League. We went down fighting and only the lightning quick reactions of Diego Costa separated the two sides at the final whistle. Boro can take a great deal of pride and confidence for the battles ahead from this strong showing at the Riverside. It was a full house with both sets of supporters contributing to a tremendous atmosphere. On an icy cold day there was plenty to warm the ....

Boro Better Than Barca

What a fabulous result on Saturday at Man City. To take on the team that had beaten Barca in midweek and hold them to a draw was a real achievement. The fact that City and fans and even Ian Wtigt-Wright-Wright on MoTD didn\'t “get” our first half performance at all says more about them perhaps than us. It also points to how we managed to copy our Arsenal performance and work another miracle because for some reason it wasn\'t expected by our opponents. The ecstasy of the ....

Ramirez Lights Up Riverside In Boro Victory Show

Boro’s Uruguayan Gaston Ramirez scored a stunning first half goal to knock the pips out of the Cherries and set us on a path to victory. A little bit of magic by Traore, a set-up by Negredo and a cool finish by Downing made it 2-0 in the second half. Bournemouth were a beaten team long before they ran out of ideas and ran short of players. Red Faction inspired Boro fans with a superb pre-match display celebrating 140 years of Middlesbrough FC. Today Gaston Ramirez lit up the Riverside ....

Can Boro Kick On?

Last week\'s draw at Arsenal was an outstanding result and a performance that gave everyone, players and fans alike real confidence going forward. Can we take those new standards and kick on today and finally break the home duck v Bournemouth. A 3pm kick off at a packed Riverside this afternoon. Come On Boro. Yes Boro finally found their Premier feet with that superb defensive display and then springing forward to our Arsenal the kings of counter attacking football. We now to bring ....

Magnificent Boro Silence The Gunners

What a performance by Boro. The whole world seemed to be caving in on us. A slight exaggeration perhaps but only slight. We were dropping like a stone and dangling by a thread above the relegation zone. Goal difference. How ironic for a tea, so shot shy. When you cannot recall your last win it is hardly the contest you want to go head to head v the top of the Premier League on their home patch. But what a difference a game makes. Come On Boro.   Aitor Karanka made a few changes ....

Boro Stung By Hornets

It was a game that most Boro fans felt we needed to win. That need became even greater after Saturday results and the knowledge that anything short of a victory next week at in form Arsenal would almost certainly take us into the bottom three. The pressure was on then for a first home win but the Riverside has been our stronghold and even a revived Watford should have been an opportunity for a major breakthrough. In the non-event Boro completely failed to build on a spirited ....
