The Boro Idol Blog – Boro’s Babes
Welcome To The House Of Tun-cay
Oh Yeah! After 3 summers putting his squad together Gareth Southgate’s vision seems to be taking shape and what a season this has the potential to be baby! The Boro Idol has heard the criticism being spouted by the usual doom-mongers in the pubs across Teesside since the defeat to Liverpool last week: “Why did he take off Tuncay?” “Why did we start defending so deep?” “Justin Hoyte’s not a left-back, and he’s just another Arsenal reject. Why did he bring him on?” you morons asked. You people need a slap in the face and an education at the Gareth Southgate School of How We’re Going To Do Things.
Yes, The Boro Idol understands your disappointment but let’s not let the result take our eyes off either the smaller or the bigger picture. Looking at the Liverpool game alone we looked composed and comfortable and it was no surprise when Mido put us ahead. Yes, we started to defend deep, but we defended deep for the majority of the game and with Liverpool lacking any quality in wide areas they resorted to trying to play through our packed central area which resulted in Ross Turnbull having to do very little. The Carragher goal was a freak, Mido hesitating for a split second waiting for the ref to blow for handball and allowing Carragher to shoot from a position where he’d hit the Kop 9 times out of 10 (10 out of 10 barring deflections). The second could have been avoided with both Digard and O’Neil just missing out on tackles in midfield when looking to break where they should possibly have held their position.

With a young, enthusiastic team little mistakes like this will happen from time to time but The Boro Idol would rather have a team looking to play in the right way and making the odd mistake than some of the safety-first, slow-motion football we’ve watched in recent seasons. For the first time in ages we have a team filled with pace and energy who may well bring the “Buzz” back to the Riverside that hasn’t been recreated since the early rollercoaster years barring the odd Uefa Cup blip.
Added to this pace and energy are a handful of genuinely inspirational players capable of changing a game in a moment of genius and The Boro Idol is looking forward to games like he hasn’t done in years. At the forefront of these players has to be Tuncay. The man has all the attributes to become a Riverside Icon, especially once he starts adding a few more goals. Can’t wait for Saturday.

Why this isn’t the song for Afonso Alves yet I don’t know. “Who’s that scoring goals from Brazil? Is it Afonso? Afonso Alves.” Simple, catchy tune. You can even clap along to it as well if you have the intelligence. If you disagree or have thought of something better which The Boro Idol seriously doubts then please get in touch at this E-mail Address I just made up: Boro_Idol_Doesn’t_Care_What_You_Think@fmttm.comeonboro.com
If not just sing along at Sunderland away, The Boro Idol’s first away day of the season.
