Tributes have been paid by Middlesbrough Former Players Association to 1950s full-back Ray Barnard, who has passed away at the age of 84.

Middlesbrough-born Barnard made 118 first team appearances for Boro during a 10-year period after making his debut as an 18-year-old amid the cauldron of a Division One Tees-Wear derby against Sunderland at Ayresome Park in December 1951.

A former England schoolboy international, he was a regular in the Boro side for three seasons in the mid-1950s under manager Bob Dennison but left the club for Lincoln City during the summer of 1960.

Barnard, who mainly played at right-back but could also play on the left, was part of the Boro side when forward Alan Peacock broke into the Boro side.

Alan, who is now chairman of Middlesbrough Former Players Association, paid tribute to Barnard, saying: “Ray was an England schoolboy international who was a few years older than me so I remember looking up to him as a kid.

“To play for England schoolboys back then was a big thing so he was clearly highly thought of. In fact, his father used to run the club’s successful junior side.

“For Boro, he was a good, solid full-back who was part of a team full of big names.”

Former Boro captain Gordon Jones, who is treasurer of the Former Players Association, added: “When I was a 16-year-old I looked up to senior players like Ray, who team-mates and fans could always rely on to do a job week in and week out.”

Barnard played alongside a number of Boro legends during his decade with the club including Wilf Mannion, Rolando Ugolini, Brian Clough, Lindy Delapenha and Billy Day.

He went on to play 43 times for Lincoln before moving on to non-league Grantham before retiring from the game after undergoing open-heart surgery.

He later worked as a machine shop foreman in the Lincoln area, where he continued to live until his death on July 7th.
