Is there a reason they patrol the same side as the linesman?
Surely better to be on the side where there is no lino?

I was sitting right behind one of them last night. He did zip. Am I thick? What exactly are they there for? It's a serious question

That was puzzling me also - in the second half one of our shots clearing clipped an Atletico player on its way wide of the goal. The ref gave a goal kick. Had this spare official been standing to the right of the goal (rather than to the left) he would've had a clear view of it...

Bluemoon 2010

Without getting to technical they were moved to the opposite side as they were obstructing the diagonal that the ref is suppossed to patrol for UEFA matches.

Their one duty this season is to see if the ball crosses the line. Last season they were also allowed to give pens, advise on goal kicks/corners etc. However, after UEFA reviewed it at the end of last season it came out that they had, between them all, made 3 decisions. Two gave corners when the ref was unsighted and one gave a penalty. this was all they were used for in both the Champs league and Europa league combined.

To be fair, they have their button in their hand which buzzes the ref which you can't see them use

I have longed questioned their purpose given that they appear not to have offered anything in support of the ref in games Ive seen, both involving us, and others Ive watched on TV. So it was surprising that I did see the official at the Kop end indicate a goal kick on Tuesday night. First time Ive seen any support offered (he got it right btw), but Hacknwey now informs us that technically he shouldn't have supported in this instance.

i bet the officials HATE it when they get the notification that they are required to do this role. the whole world knows they are utterly pointless, seems even UEFA are dialing back their responsibility...presumably will go the same way as the goalkeeper "steps!" rule, and other pointless changes.
