I thought they were fukcing great last night, dug in and defended for their lives when they had to. A proper masterclass in defending and showed why English teams are a mile away from winning the CL, as no English side would have withstood the battering we dished out 2nd half.

Also in the grand scheme of CL matches, thought they kept the time-wasting and gamesmanship to a minimum. The team that beats them wins the CL IMO.

They were immense. Lined up 5-5-0 for the second half and did the job.

They were smarter, stronger and never in any real danger. We huffed puffed and gave it a go, but we lacked any real guile or quality. Easy for Simeone to be magnanimous and blown a bit of smoke up our hole, but it was a fairly straightforward night for them.

Good luck to Atletico and I hope they win it. Difficult to play with guile when you are chasing three goals. We had any number of near misses for that second goal and had any gone in, it would have been a very difficult night indeed for Atletico.

for three quarters of the tie, i agree.

but if one of those near misses / blocks had gone in to make it 2-1 (ulloa / vardy / chilwell) with 20 minutes to go, would have been very interesting. you'd assume they would have got another on a counter, but they did look twitchy and who knows how they would have reacted.

There was nothing clear cut though, that was the beauty of Madrid, they only allowed half chances.

They worked very hard to make it so, but that's what they do and that takes guile and quality.

Yeah agreed Tartan, like a skilled boxer who has enough ability to keep a psycho at arms length at all times, they restricted us to trying to pick up scraps from crosses in the 2nd half. The art of defence like that has been long lost in the PL.

They just reminded me of us but with a bit of extra quality and nous, which I suppose is what you get when you dine at the top levels of the CL season after season.

Agree totally. They defended really well and closed us down for a good 15 mins in the 2nd half when we had the momentum.

However, let's not forget we went out to a penalty that wasn't and only conceded one goal from open play.

Proud of the lads and the club last night.

In many ways watching them makes you realise why we frustrated so many opposition fans last season and most of them like their managers came out and said 'we should've won the game' etc etc.

Creatively they offered very little. Both home and away when we had men behind the ball they looked stunted and ordinary. But when they needed a goal they were clinical. 1 shot on target of any real note and 1 goal. They were organised and even last night ran further than we did. Technically miles apart from us and mentally even further. Masters of the dark arts. Holding on to the ball when it ran out of play from the start of the game onwards, subs at the right time, fouls in the right areas at the right times.

Claudio said on MNF that he moulded our team to mimick them and at this moment in time we are the under 10's to their under 18's. Sadly.

If we are a side who can play beyond our individual limitations, then sooner or later that was not going to be enough but I, for one, could not be prouder.
Barney Ronay's piece in this morning's Guardian is well worth reading for his usual lyrical style.

Atletico reminded me of us last season, when we were at our defending, counter-attacking best - with N'Golo Kante.

I agree with Ranieri, that had we been able to hold onto him, even just for this season - we would have won the Champions League.

the 'beauty' of atletico is that they had absolute belief in their ability.

how many english teams would say 1-0 is enough. we would always press for a second to make it safer. but they had so much faith in their system and team mates that in both games, at 1-0, they changed system and were completely happy to defend.

i didn't enjoy it, but against anyone else it would be a thing of beauty. they just need to cut out the card waving antics from the first leg.

they didn't put a pass astray all night. not one.

in my head I have discounted the penalty at their place and given them the win on the away goal. which was a XXXXXXing awesome header.

I love this:

As Leicester pushed hard to the end it all felt a bit like a house party the night before the removal men come, the kind of evening when the drinks cabinet is drained, the fridge emptied, plates smashed, party poppers unspooled all over the kitchen floor

We have to remember nights like last night as they may never be seen again.

Just spare a thought for our dear neighbours :

- Checkatrade two bob cup and relegation to Div 2 for the M69 pond dwellers

- Relegation battle to avoid Div 1 for the red dogs

- mid table mediocrity for the sheep

Drink it in and enjoy the moment

Up the City !

Agreed, it's the way to go. We may be miles behind Atletico at their game, but for the rest of this country it's a matter of light years. If we can concentrate on developing and improving the team along the same lines over the coming seasons, further success may still come our way.
I don't know if this has been commented on already, but there was not a single yellow card dished out on either side last night, which considering the intensity of the occasion is remarkable.

Athletico were very good indeed. In both games our players were allowed two touches before it became difficult to go anywhere with the ball. At times it felt like they had 15 players on the pitch.

I was so proud of the team for the way they kept going. To feel that there was a still a chance even at 90 mins was fantastic and that second half was so exciting, I really felt that we'd get that goal, but the last 15 mins just went too fast!

What a ride!
