Got a long unused sky dish on the house with the cable in me bedroom.

If I buy a FreeSat box, is it just a matter of connecting the cable in to the box for it to work?

cheers

No, but you can easily pick up a Sky+ box on eBay for just a few quid that will give you access to all the Freeview channels.
This is all assuming it's a Sky Digital dish and not the much older analogue one.

Edited to say YES you can. For some reason I thought you meant BT box.

Thanks for the advice chaps, i knew between you and google i'd find the answer.... the freest site says this.....

"Using your existing satellite dish
If you already have a satellite dish and cabling, (for example one that has been previously used to receive Sky TV), in most cases you can simply plug your Freesat digital box or TV in and enjoy subscription free satellite TV."

wtfh, that would be great pal, do you want owt for it?

Yes.

You will receive (almost) all the free to air channels as Freeview with the exception of the ones that are part of sky's packages (Dave being one of these).

I've had a Humax Freesat HD boxes for years and think they're brilliant especially the new models.

Just connect it up and off you go.

Gotta disagree about Humax boxes. Buggy, awkward, poor user-interface, in need of weekly re-booting, and dreadful phone support.
Truly not a patch on Sky's technology.
But cheaper.

It's easy buy a freesat recorder(I've got a humax but look on ebay) don't get a sky box you can't get HD without paying, just two connections at the back.
