[V]As a FULHAM fan living in Gillingham I cant believe Gillingham fans still sing about killing Foxy. Walking past some gillingham fans the other day and they start singing that crap. It just goes to show how successful gillingham are when they have to celebrate a football fans death!!! Very sad!!!

Ignore them, mate, they're a bunch of muppets. Every club has their idiots, yourselves included and Fox was one of them (not that that means he deserved to die) - i.e. we hear sick crap from Liverpool, Man United, Leeds fan etc, about the Munich air crash Hillsborough etc. This doesn't excuse it, it was ages ago and these prats should sing about something else and a bit more contemporaneuous at that.

We seem to have a sadly growing buch of XXXXXXs attaching themselves to the Gills - we should probably all stop posting about them and ignore them as giving them more coverage is probably what they want.

To hold the fact that a tiny minority of muppets sing a stupid song about a thug and a scumbag being killed by another thug and a scumbag against a whole football club and your local team, is pretty pathetic.

Not worried whether you watch us any more or if you support our opposition, but it's ridiculous to base your opinion on Gillingham FC and its fans on the actions of 30 or so hooligans.

That would be kind of like us thinking that all Fulham fans were wannabe hooligans, like the one who perished at our ground.

There's plenty more of us who hate that song being sung and try to stop it than there are those who actually sing it.

What I hate is the fact that everyone judges so easily on here.

Even down to saying Matthew Fox is a scumbag- did anyone know him.... No? Because he happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time obviously makes him a scumbag.

O of course.. Gate 13 loves this sort of coverage! You dont know any of them, i can assure you A. they do not stand looking at stewards all game as suggested and B. that we dont do anything for the pleasure of you lot to harp on at how terrible we are.

We have been going for years- All we like do to is drink and watch our team- If trouble finds us so be it- were not the type to hold back from saying something to someone face- shame a lot of you cannot do the same aye.

Spot on. I was gonna say the same thing. Snake is clearly a new wave fan, possibly one of the muppets, as anyone who knew the way the set-up of Priestfiend at that time would know that Fox had no reason to be where he was. The away supporters exited on Redfern Ave in those days, the Town End exited where the current away exit is, which is where he was killed - the only reason he, and his mates, could have gone up that alley was to confront Gills' fans. Also, there was a lot of comment at the time as to his involvement with Fulham's hooligans, much of which came from other Fulham fans.

Anyway, this is a debate from years back and one we don't really need to go over again, but thought it should be mentioned in response to Snake's uneducated/ignorant comment.

Sorry Gills 69 but the crowd trouble in the play offs against Swindon was in the late 80's.

They also sing about the Fulham fan that died which was 1998.

Either way I am sure the gate 13 lot have nothing to do with either of these 2 events, yet they still sing about it.

I also agree that people should stop talking about Gate 13 (if that's the point you're trying to make) - it's just giving these increasing bunch of muppets the attention they crave.

BILKO

Well said!!!!!!!!!

I too was at that end of the ground in 1998 and what went on in the alley way and at the end of Priestfield road entrance was entirely of Matthew Fox's own making.

The full report states that FULHAM so called fans ran out of the awaysupport entrance on the old main stand side and up the alley tp confront Gills Town End fans.

Fox did intend to cause harm, he was high on drugs, and in addition to this unproved allagation was found to have at Medway Hospital drugs strapped to his leg.

The unfortunate Barry Cullen was directly in his path and in self defence struck him with a single blow which caused him to crack HIS HEAD ON THE CONCRETE.

Very tragic.

He who lives by the sword dies by the sword as they say.

No decent person wants to hear XXXXXXs like that singing or chanting something that's offensive and out of order.

However if you take the stance that every time you hear something unacceptable at the football, you won't ever visit that ground again, I think you'll find you soon run out of teams to watch. As pointed out, every club has mindless ignorant idiots.

There have been many times Iíve questioned whether my love for the Gills is worth sitting listening to XXXXXXe, from the annoying (clueless abuse of the players/manager) to the abhorrent (racism and other excessive abuse, songs about Foxís death).

However, as in wider society, if you stand up against it or report it or even discuss it on a MB like this, then youíll find that actually the vast majority are not thick scum and also know where to draw the line.

Whistable has it about right, as far as I can remember.

Matthew Fox was looking for trouble, and had gone charging up the alley looking for Gillingham fans to attack.

The fact he was were he was, is quite significant, as he had no reason to be there.

He was struck in self defence, and he unfortunately died. (there were many rumours at the time that he was knifed, which was untrue. Still many believe this to be true, from comments I've seen).

It should never be the case that someone loses their life at a football match. But he was somewhat culpable in his own death.

I also seem to remember at the time that he was on a hooligan register. Although I'm not 100% certain if that was the case.

I'd never heard the bit about drugs though.

On arrival at Medway hospital the said body was laid out to rest and drugs were found.

He incidently was also banned from Fulham's home ground and away travel with supporters groups.

A known hooligan.

So, for all those Gills followers who have sympathy for him, think again.

I suspect those who have sympathy for MT also go along with the early release of the lockerbie bomber ?

Trouble will find trouble.

I'm of the opinion that regardless of the circumstances a death of someone at a football match should never be sung about.
With reference to the lockerbie bomber above.I confess to not having too much knowledge of his conviction but an opinion has been expressed that this was not an iron clad case and that he may even have been innocent.

A Policeman and a colleague were stationed between the fans and filmed the whole game. He then moved to an area where he could see clearly the whole alley and filmed down into it. Fox was filmed moving down the alley, altercation occured and he was struck in the back of the head hitting his head on the pavement thats why charge was manslaughter. The actual incident is on camera, copper got a commendation (he was subjected to verbal and physical abuse during the game)
Cullen handed himself in because of the video evidence (he had been named), he wasnt a big Gillingham supporter, barely been to a handful of games. There were many known people there who had never been associated with football before.
I heard nothing about drugs.

To this day, I am still at a loss to understand why that alleyway was not being patrolled by the single policeman at each end that has been customary at virtually every high profile game, or even dog handlers given the Keegan/Akinbii comments and build up. Especially, given that it so obvious during the game, even from the Rainham End, that it was 90% certain to kick off outside.

All we ever heard about was about Barry Cullen, as I recall it, no questions were ever raised about the policing that day.

Sorry Falg but people are responsible for their own actions and your ac=rguement basically says that because there were no police there its ok for people to exactly what they want. Not really sustainable as a point of view.

Fact is that there is never any trouble at rugby matches and more people go to Wellford Road than the Walkers stadium. At Wellford road you can buy beer sit with oppositopn fans drink with them and not manage to have a fight with them. Why is that?

The problem is people driven and those who demand segragation are the very people who uphold the violence.

thanks guys, people are absolutely responsible for their own actions and the resulting consequences.

I am pointing out, that given the context - a football match - given the history - and given the simple measure that could have been in place, it was preventable.

That simple measure could even have consisted of locking the gates that were in place at each end of the alleyway, and that were there in the first place because of previous altercations in the environs of the football club.

No-one has ever explained why that day, nothing was in place to cover off the alleyways that are normally an explicit part of the policing plan on a matchday.

Well Jackson, the match was 1998 (not 1996), I believe. Fulham had a multi millionaire squad with the likes of Philippe Albert, Peter Beardsley, Chris Coleman (?) and various other rejects and has-beens on big money and were top of the league. We were in the playoff push. The Background is that transfer window has just shut and Fulham tried to sign our top scorer Sir Ade Akinbiyi for £1million+ and we turned it down (also, I canít recall what the Keegan comments were about). Anyway, it was a lively local derby with a full house of 10K plus in. It was a cracking game played in front of a brilliant but edgy atmosphere. We matched the money boys and scored courtesy of two late goals by, youíve guessed it, the man of the hour, Akinbiyi, who celebrated vociferously in front of a rampant Town End adjacent to the Fulham fans.

From memory, it all really kicked off with the Town End going a little OTT with their celebrations (I stood there in those days) and charging towards the away end, including scaling the fences. The Fulham fans responded with batteries, bottles of pi ss etc. and lovingly opted to join the Gills fans on the Town End side. This resulted in both sets of fans lobbing things at each other and trying to embrace each other over the fences. Both sets of fans were let out at the same time and surprise, surprise, it kicked off. A group of Fulham fans, apparently charged the home end (whether this is true, I donít know, but this is where the incident occurred and they had no business being there as it was in the opposite direction of the station and Fulham coaches) and in the ensuing violence, Fox was killed, apparently by one punch to the head from Cullen, who went down for manslaughter. I remember it going all off over Gillingham for some time and the Gills making the headlines on the BBC news (for the only time I can remember) for all the wrong reasons.

I think that pretty much covers the facts of it without going into any detail about the actions of the perpetrator of the crime or the victim, their backgrounds, drugs, booze etc etc.
