Prague. Any tips?

I'm heading to Prague next week, does anyone have any recommendations on things to do, restaurants, etc?

Also, I'm visiting Generali arena to watch Sparta Prague play on the Thursday. Anyone been to the stadium?

Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

Prague. Any tips?
Several years since me and Mrs BB visited but loved the city.

The old town is very compact and you can easily see all the main attractions in 3-4 days.

Charles Bridge is a must, plus a walk up to the castle and cathedral.

When visiting the old town square and Astronomical clock, take the climb up the clock tower; the views over the city are fantastic.

Hotel U Prince directly opposite serves good food and was reasonably priced for a 5 star hotel. Had a super evening in there, watching a jazz quartet.

The little bright coloured tourist cars are great for a whistle-stop tour of the city.

Oh and yes.... the beer! [:P]

Enjoy.

Great city. We had a fabulous night in what claimed to be the oldest pub (no doubt there will be more than one!) sat outside on big and ancient wooden benches.

Agree with Bada

I'd add that whether or not you're interested in classical music or not it's worth taking in a concert at one of the major theatre's simply for the experience. We did the one at the top of Wencelas Square [Nat Opera House?] and saw a Mozart concert. Tickets very cheap, so cheap in fact we got a box. Although it was a while ago.

Done Prague three times and love it.

Prague. Any tips?
Prague has a great tram system- get a travel card as it works out cheaper. Wencelas Square you can see the Jan Palach memorial on the spot on the pavement where he tragically died.If you are interested in WW2 you can visit the church where Heydrich's assassins held out against the Nazis for a while and see the bullet holes in the cellar walls.

Visit 'U Fleku', the oldest inn in the world dating back to the 1400s, for a few jars of their unique dark lager. There are many small breweries across the city.
Prague cathedral has the tomb of good King Wenceslas (Vačlav I).
Midway across Charles bridge there are steps down to the island in the river, Na KampÍ, there are a couple of good hearty restaurants. You can't go wrong if you like pig knuckle, dumplings and cabbage!
We caught the Czech national Christmas concert at the Narodny Divadlo (National Theatre) on the riverbank, and also an opera at the State Opera House, at the top of Wenceslas Square, where many of Mozart's works were first played. You can buy tickets online using the national ticket agency, and have them delivered to your hotel.
The Jewish quarter is fascinating, particularly the old Jewish cemetery where burials were piled on top of each other in a small space so the surface is about 20 feet above ground level. The only reason it survived is that Hitler wanted Prague to be 'a museum to an extinct race'. Chilling.
The National Museum of Decorative Arts is quite interesting in terms of paintings, Bohemian glass, furniture etc. Lots of other museums.

We've been twice, lovely city.
However, very congested on the main bridge and in the square when the Cathedral bell is about to Chime. Fantastic watching the figures coming out etc.

Prague. Any tips?
On top of all the above have suggested, I have two suggestions :-

1)Look up the "Vytopona" restaurant. Its got a number of small railways that weave around the whole restaurant...and your beer gets delivered to your table on the back of a train ! You put your empties on the back too ad they get taken away. You don't have to be a train geek to find it quite entertaining !

Also, when you visit the castle, carry on about a third of a mile to the Strahov monastery area. Here , other than great views are a number of good restaurants and microbrewery bars with outside seating.

An example is Klasterni Pivovar.

at the top here is the only remaining vineyards in Prague and you can walk down part way through a nice woodland/park to you get to a funicular railway , which drops you all the way back down into Prague itself.

Enjoy.

One final tip.

Just sit and relax in the centre of the Old Town Square for a couple of hours and people watch.

Glad some-one mentioned U Fleku. Great place.

The further away from the main square, the cheaper the beer & food.

Keep your wallet close, inevitably there's the odd pickpocket unfortunately.

We are going with a few friends in October for a famous horse race meeting the Velka Pardubicka. Prague is just great to wonder around. There's nothing to worry about, just roam, it's so steeped in history and classical beauty. Food is magnificent and most people speak English. I could mention hundreds of places to go but the ones, mentioned above are a good start. The beautiful thing about Prague is it's size, you can cover it In a few days but there's always something new or undiscovered and I've been there literally a hundred times as my wife is from there.

Don't fall into '20's trap.

We were in Mallorca recently, and missus tigger wanted to go to the old town as she'd been told it was great for 'people watching'. I really want to go to a bar to watch cricket but went along to keep marital harmony.

Anyway after 5 minutes she told me to 'stop staring' at people

When does people watching turn into staring and making people uncomfortable? Buggered if I know.

Interesting thing happened last time we were in Prague.
We were walking towards the square, it was quite crowded, all of a sudden there was this loud crack of noise. A few yards in front of us this woman, youngish and quite attractive, had smacked this older guy across the face. It was quite a smack, the guy reeled and almost fell over. The woman said something and walked on leaving the guy looking shocked.
Don't really know why it happened but I thought that he had touched her inappropriately. [;)]

And Tigger; ogling fit Czech totty does not constitute 'people watching' [LOVE]
