At some stage tomorrow Lancs will have to start the innings which will define their season.
They don't know yet the size of their deficit, but they do know that they are going to have to fight !
Survival this term may depend upon it.

They'll get a lead of between 60 and 80.

We can't bat as bad again - loads of time to build a big lead . . . say 300.

We'll also bowl better and get our first win. [^]

Oddly, just been out in the car and The Best of Radiohead popped up on the MP3. It's an Omen.

89-2 in effect at Lunch.

it should come down to that equation of runs set versus time left. I'd think Lancs would want all day tomorrow to bowl and if that's the case they need to be 330 ahead tonight. A tall order, but if they crack on. Then again Lancs will be mindful of not losing it from here by giving cheap wickets away.

Hail the thief !!! sorry wrong thread

Another 120 before tea and then throw the bat after tea provided we haven't lost too many wickets. A lead of 350 should be possible.

Weather tomorrow morning is supposed to be a bit cloudy with a chance of rain . . should be a decent 5 sessions provided the rain keeps away.

The weather forecast in the morning is a 30/40% chance of rain, if the 60% balance materialises, it will surely be grey an overcast. Lanky will want add every run that they can find knowing that a fourth innings chase is the most difficult of all because there's no safety net.
If Lanky get to 300 I would favour them. Few teams score that many to win. Even 280 might do it, and they've got 254 now.
Either way, they have really grown up in this game.

Thanks to TML and co for the updates. Have to say really impressed with the start we have made. Decision to bring in Parry has been vindicated, and delighted to see Clark holding down a regular slot. Like the look of the bowling attack which certainly has plenty of variety. McLaren looks an inspired signing already, and I do hope we can now go on and have a meaningful Royal London campaign.

I wonder how Mr Giles is feeling at the moment, having left a team of hungry young turks for a side of golden oldies?

Onwards and upwards Lancashire!

Times match report by Paul Edwards

Lancashire complete unlikely victory over Somerset

This remarkable game was generous to the last, although Somerset supporters may argue that the largesse was chiefly displayed by their batsmen yesterday.

Such a caustic judgment allots insufficient credit to Lancashire’s seamers who made excellent use of a pitch offering variable bounce to dismiss Somerset for 130. But it may also reflect a measure of disbelief in the West Country that a side who had earned a first-innings lead of 169 can then manage to lose by 164 runs.

Dismissed for 109 on the first morning, Liam Livingstone’s players completed their first victory in the County Championship since May 24 last year when the admirable Ryan McLaren burst through Tim Groenewald’s defences at 4.35pm.

That left the former South Africa all-rounder with figures of four for 37 and eight for 113 in a match that had gone a long way towards justifying his signing. For if the possibility of merely saving the game had grown thanks to hundreds in the second innings by Alex Davies and Livingstone, the work necessary to win it was done by McLaren, Jordan Clark and James Anderson who made Somerset’s target of 295 look so distant as to be all but invisible.

It probably helped Lancashire that they lost their last three wickets inside the first 75 minutes of the morning session and were thus not able to declare late and cautiously.

Needing to score at a relatively modest 3.83 runs an over, Somerset never gained a glimpse of their target. After going into lunch on 29 without loss, Tom Abell’s men lost seven wickets for 79, those of Marcus Trescothick and Steven Davies being taken by Anderson, who bowled a quite outstanding seven-over spell, replete with accuracy and movement, from the Pavilion End.

Anderson was replaced by McLaren, who had earlier removed Abell, strangled down the leg side for nought. Inspired by the senior bowler’s example, he had James Hildreth and Josh Davey leg-before.

Added to Clark’s dismissal of Peter Trego, caught at slip by Livingstone, McLaren’s wickets suddenly made Somerset’s defeat a strong probability.

Clark’s two wickets after tea and McLaren’s coup de grâce completed what will be seen as one of the finest comebacks in the county’s history and was a tremendous fillip for Glen Chapple, the new head coach.

“The win came a lot faster than we expected. We thought it would [come], but it is great to get over the line,” Chapple said. “After the first innings the game has been a sustained effort of determination, quality cricket and a team unit sticking together. The partnership between Alex and Liam was of high quality. Everyone can see that Liam is a big-occasion player as well as a quality one. Obviously he is now a talking point for further honours.”

While England caps await him, Livingstone received his county one last night in recognition of his outstanding contribution of five first-class hundreds over the past year.

A reality check before we all go giddy.
In three games so far in the CCC, Lanky have collapsed three times in the first innings (which is where the bonus points are); 160/5 at Chelmsford, 67/5 at the Oval, and 109 a o at OT.
A remarkable comeback yesterday, that perhaps surpassed our wildest dreams, but why do we HAVE to do it in every match to even stay in the game ?
