|John Carew is hoping for a classic Midlands derby when Wolves visit Villa this weekend – but the big man says the hosts must focus on the need to maintain their push for a top-four finish.
Back-to-back home games against Mick McCarthy’s present team and former side Sunderland give Villa a fantastic chance to build on the win at Wigan which has given them fresh hope of taking the final Champions League spot. But Carew says last year’s late-season collapse in form is still in their minds and they are desperate to avoid a repeat.

Carew said: ‘We’ve learned from last year, when we didn’t manage to maintain the level for the whole season. I’m sure this year we’re going to be able to maintain the high level all the way until the end of the season and take the important points to be up there fighting for fourth place.
‘Last year we might not have won at Wigan like we did on Tuesday. We have a busy schedule but we have a bigger squad and there’s been more players playing this year than before. The players are super-fit and are really enjoying it, so we are not feeling sorry for ourselves.
‘We have two home games to come now, so we have to take a lot of confidence from into it. We must go out there and enjoy it and know that we can win. I’m sure there will be a brilliant derby atmosphere on Saturday and it will be one of the best games of the season.
‘Some of the finest games I have been involved with at Villa have been the derby games at home.’
